Season in Review: Men’s Soccer

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's soccer team finished the 2022 season with a record of 8-7-5 and 4-1-3 in conference play earning a No. 4 seed in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) men's soccer tournament for the first time since 2018.

Carthage started the season with a 2-1 win over WashU, who was ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 preseason poll at the time. The Firebirds got their first conference win by defeating Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 at home on Saturday, September 24, which sparked two-consecutive the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) wins over Carroll (Wis.) 3-2 and Augustana (Ill.) 3-0.

On Wednesday, October 12, the men's team picked up another non-conference win over Lake Forest 5-0 at home and added another win over Millikin 2-1 on Saturday, October 22. After tying Elmhurst 2-2 in the regular season finale, Carthage earned a postseason appearance for the first time in 2018 and the first under first-year head coach Paul Leese. Playing as the No. 4 seed in the CCIW men's soccer tournament, Carthage defeated Elmhurst 4-1, advancing to face top-seeded North Central (Ill.) on Wednesday, November 2. Although the Firebirds fought hard against the Cardinals, North Central (Ill.) won the game 1-0.

"Overall I was pleased with the season," said head coach Paul Leese. "The attitude and application of the boys was outstanding, and we have fantastic student-athletes representing the men's soccer team and Carthage College. The players had to learn new concepts, which took time to develop, but we saw this benefit in the second half of the season, particularly against the No. 1 team in the nation, losing an even game by only one goal. Most important, however, was the introduction of a new culture, which was embraced by the players and will fuel our future growth. Although we lost out on the CCIW Final, again by a single goal, I see tremendous potential in this program and am excited about the future."
