Baseball Concludes its Spring Trip with a 7-5 Win over Middlebury on March 24

No. 29 Red Men Open CCIW Play on Saturday at North Central (Ill.)

Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (5-5, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 29th in the March 27 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/“D3baseball.com” poll, wrapped up a 10-game spring trip to Tucson, Ariz., on Saturday, March 24 with a 7-5 win over Middlebury College (0-1) at the Kino Sports Complex.
 
Middlebury took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run double by Will Blaine.  Carthage erased that lead with a four-run third frame.  Tyler Eickmeyer singled, Joey Aiello hit a two-run triple, and Zach Kozlowski followed with a sacrifice fly.  The Panthers cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but an RBI-double by Drew Bailey and a run-scoring grounder by Eickmeyer in the bottom half gave the Red Men a 6-3 edge.  A sacrifice fly by Andrew Arenson in the fifth upped the margin to 7-3.  Middlebury tallied two runs  in the seventh to close out the scoring.
 
Pitcher Alex Newberry (Jr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 1-0) worked the first six innings and allowed three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters.  Andrew Arenson (So., Naperville, Ill./North) worked the final three innings to earn his first save, despite giving up two runs in the seventh.  Tyler Eickmeyer (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Somers-Shoreland Lutheran) went three-for-four with two RBI and a stolen base and upped his season batting average to .429.  Tyler Wark led the Panthers with three hits in four trips, with pitcher Michael Joseph (0-1) going the distance and taking the loss.
 
Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Saturday, March 31 to open its CCIW-schedule with a Noon doubleheader against North Central College (9-4, 0-0 CCIW) at Zimmerman Stadium/Alumni Field.
