Baseball Dodges Rain, Snow, Hail and the Norse in Frigid Tucson

Carthage Falls to Luther, 13-7, on March 19 but Defeats Carleton, 9-4

3/19/2012 8:17:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 This can't be Arizona in March.  It rained in the afternoon, and that never happens here.  Before that, it snowed.  Just before game time, there was a hail storm.  Just to add insult to injury, the temperature plummeted.  The Carthage College baseball team (2-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 14th in the March 13 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association/“D3baseball.com” poll, might have been better off playing on Alford Park Drive.  The Red Men lost to Luther College (2-3), 13-7, on Monday, March 19 at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.  Carthage played a second game on Monday night, upending Carleton College (3-4) by a 9-4 margin.

The defense, which had been so good in the season-opener on Saturday against Dakota Wesleyan University, let Carthage down in the third inning of the Luther contest.  With a runner on base due to an infield error and two outs, second baseman Zack Kozlowski was charged with an error allowing Thomas Weber to score from third.  Ryan Bahnemann followed with a two-run double down the leftfield line, and Luther led, 3-0.  The Red Men got two runs back in the fifth on an RBI-triple by Drew Bailey and an RBI-double by Tyler Eickmeyer.  The Norse scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead, three of those runs with two outs following an earlier error on a bunt play.  The seventh run chased Carthage starting pitcher Danny Dahm from the game.

The Red Men scored five times in the sixth to tie the game, 7-7.  Mike Wasche singled in a run.  Kyle Frye doubled in another.  Drew Bailey singled in two, and Chris D'Angelo drove home the tying run.  An RBI-double by Ben Obermann in the seventh put the Norse up to stay, 8-7.  Kevin Bradley's two-out, two-run double in the eighth, followed by an RBI-single by Obermann and a two-run triple by Chris Erickson, put Luther up by six, 13-7.  Matt Reynolds (1-0), in relief of starter Danny Smith, was the winning pitcher for Luther.  Jeremy Salzmann (0-1) took the loss for Carthage.  Salzmann allowed the final six runs on seven hits and three walks.  Danny Dahm gave up the first seven runs on seven hits and three walks.  Red Men freshman shortstop Drew Bailey (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went two-for-four with a triple and three RBI.

In the Carleton game, Carthage had a 4-0 lead after four innings.  Joey Aiello tripled in a run in the first, and Tyler Eickmeyer tripled home another in the fourth.  After Carleton tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the eighth, the Red Men came up with five runs in the bottom half for the 9-4 win.  Brian Huntsinger singled in two runs in the eighth, followed by run-scoring singles by Eickmeyer and Aiello.  Eickmeyer went three-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI.  Zach Kozlowski went three-for-three with an RBI, while Aiello and Huntsinger both had two hits and two RBI.  Alex Newberry was the starting pitcher for the Red Men.  Newberry allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over seven and one-third innings, while striking out 11 batters.  Sam Wilhelms took over with one out in the eighth, as the tying run scored on an error by rightfielder Kyle Frye.  Wilhelms was credited with the win after Carthage scored five times in the bottom half.

On Tuesday, March 20, Carthage faces Hamline University at 11 a.m.  On Wednesday, March 21, the Red Men play a makeup game with Wisconsin-Superior at 2 p.m.  On Thursday, March 22, Carthage takes on Carleton at 10 a.m. and No. 9 Eastern Connecticut State University at 2 p.m.  On Friday, March 23, the Red Men play a Noon game with Nebraska Wesleyan University.  The trip concludes on Saturday, March 24 with a 2 p.m. contest against Middlebury College.
