Full Team Effort Leads Firebirds to Victory at Private College Championships

MILWAUKEE - The Carthage men's track and field team continued their outdoor campaign at the Private College Championships, hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran, in Milwaukee, Wis. on Saturday.  The team was back together after a split squad weekend the previous week, and the Firebirds took advantage of the opportunity and came away with their first team victory of the outdoor season.

Team Results

The Firebirds placed first overall out of nine teams with 208 points. St. Norbert placed second with 167 points. Beloit was third with 86 points with Concordia (Wis.) close behind in fourth with 78 points. Marquette rounded out the top five with 63 points. 



SPRINTS

The 4x100m relay consisting of Christopher Seals, Mac Anderson, Shawn Rodgers, and Dylan Parker placed second with a time of 43.90 seconds, securing eight points for the Firebirds. 

Parker won the 400m with a personal best time of 49.29. Andy Liu placed eighth with a time of 52.95. The duo registered 11 team points.

The 200m added 15 points to the team score with Andreson winning the event with a time of 22.16 and Luke Shugarman placing fourth with a time of 23.18.

The Firebirds added eight points in the 100m dash with Seals placing third with a personal best time of 11.08 and Rodgers placing seventh with a time of 11.36. 

The 4x400m relay consisting of Alek Zavadoski, Tre Mitchell III, Chase Upmann, and Liu placed second with a combined time of 3:26.76.

DISTANCE

The Firebirds racked up 32 points in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Micah Anderson leading the way with a first place finish with a time of 9:44.31. Four athletes secured personal bests with Luke Davey placing second with a time of 9:54.12, Topher Davis in third with a time of 9:54.77, Harlan Matson in fourth with a time of 9:59.42 and Andrew Schaer placing sixth with a time of 10:25.49.

Upmann won the 1500m with a time of 4:01.94 securing 10 points towards the team score. Jacob Curulewski and Trevor Swanson added five points with a sixth and seventh place finish respectively. Curulewski ran a personal best time of 4:06.88 and Swanson finished in 4:07.82. 

The Firebirds placed second through fifth in the 5000m scoring 23 team points. Chad Helmke led the way in second with a personal best time of 16:02.00, with Braydon Barth placing third with a time of 16:16.01. Charles Fitts and Ryan Ciezczak placed fourth and fifth respectively running personal best times of 16:28.91 and 16:41.80.

JUMPS

Kedrick Johnson III placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.49m. 

Carthage accumulated nine points to the team score in the pole vault with Benjamin Keaty and Nick DeLuca placing fourth and fifth respectively with both athletes having personal best heights of 2.95m. 

THROWS

Two Firebirds scored in the shot put with Tyler Rose placing second with a mark of 14.72m and Jordan Hughes placing sixth with a mark of 13.26m. 

Lucas Leal and Jacob Brost went 1-2 in the hammer throw with marks of 58.39m and 51.64m respectively. Rose placed sixth with a mark of 45.29m. 

Brost won the Javelin with a personal best throw of 56.12m. 

Rose won the discus throw with a personal best throw of 49.32m. Hughes came fourth in the event with a mark of 43.00m and Leal placed eighth with a mark of 37.56m. 


 
  • Rose moves into 14th on the NCAA Division III qualifying list in the discus throw with his mark of 49.32m. Rose currently leads the CCIW in the event, with Hughes in seventh at 43.00m. Rose moves into eighth place on the Carthage all-time list, passing Bill Versen at 48.81m (1978).
  • Brost moved into second place in the javelin throw with a mark of 56.12m and fifth place in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.64m. Brost sits in second on the Carthage all-time list in javelin (new), passing Wes Schroeder's mark of 55.53m (2006).
  • Parker now ranks second in the CCIW in the 400m at 49.29 seconds. Parker entered the Carthage all-time performance list in the event, sneaking into 10th place past Seth Petty at 49.31 (2014).
  • Johnson III sits in fifth place in the CCIW in the triple jump with a mark of 13.49m.
  • Ma. Anderson moved into sixth place in the CCIW in the 200m with a time of 22.16 seconds.
  • Upmann sits in sixth place in the CCIW with his 4:01.94 performance.
  • Mi. Anderson ranks sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase for the CCIW with a time of 9:44.31. Luke Davey ranks ninth at 9:54.12, while Davis rounds out the top 10 at 9:54.77.



"We started the outdoor season strong and carried that momentum well into the WI Private College Championships," said Head Coach Josh Henry. "Despite a cooler forecast we still saw 3 new top 10 program performances and several steps taken in the right direction. We're looking forward to carrying our strong start into Wheaton and Platteville next week."



The Firebirds return to action on Friday, April 11 at the Wis-Platteville Invitational in Platteville, Wis. and Saturday, April 12 as the team competes at the Wheaton College Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
