Red Men Close Out the 2013 Season by Playing Host to Chicago on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (17-21, 9-12 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) split a Saturday, May 4 doubleheader with CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 14-24, 10-11 CCIW) at Legion Field in Carol Stream, Ill.  Carthage came from behind to win the first game, 6-5, before losing the nightcap by a 3-1 margin.  The Red Men opened the series on Friday, May 3 with a 6-1 loss at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis. 

The loss in the second game on Saturday eliminated Carthage from qualifying for this year's CCIW Baseball Tournament, the second year in a row that the Red Men have missed the event.
 
In Saturday's opening game, a two-run single by Justin Swider in the first inning and another run-scoring single in the second helped give the Thunder an early 4-1 lead.  Carthage cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth on an RBI-single by Mike Gentile.  The two teams traded runs in the sixth, with Stevo Kraynak driving the Red Men's run.  Carthage took the lead, 6-5, with a three-run seventh inning.  The Red scored on RBI-singles by Kyle Pusateri and Matt Richer, along with a Marc Mantucca sacrifice fly.  Mitch Lochen (Sr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South, 3-2) was the winning pitch in relief of Andrew Arenson (Jr., Naperville, Ill./North).  Lochen blanked the Thunder on one hit over the final two inning.  Arenson surrendered five runs on five hits and three walks over five innings.  Evan Rahn (4-5) took the loss for Wheaton.  Pusateri and Richer each had two hits for the Red Men.
 
In the second game, Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI-single by Matt Cmiel.  Wheaton tied the game in the bottom half on a Red Men infield error.  The Thunder went up, 3-1, in the third on a two-run single by Phil Tuttle.
 
Josh Arevalo (2-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on six hits and no walks over six and two-thirds innings.  Tom Bishop got the last out to earn his first save.  Josh Daniels (Jr., Elk Grove, Ill., 3-2) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed all three runs, two earned on two hits and two walks in two innings.  Sam Wilhelms (Jr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) shut out the Thunder on three hits over the final four innings. 

Carthage closes out its season on Sunday, May 5 by playing host to non-conference opponent the University of Chicago (21-12) in a 1 p.m. game at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
