Firebirds Slowed by North Park Saturday; Elmhurst Steals One in Sunday Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College baseball squad wrapped up the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action over the weekend, falling to North Park 6-2 and 13-4 before returning home suffering a 12-4 setback to Elmhurst Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • Carthage started the weekend with a 1-0 score in the third with a Kody Krekling RBI single. 
  • The Vikings retaliated with two runs in the fourth. 
  • An Evan Devine RBI single allowed Chuckie Smith to cross home plate, tying the game at two. 
  • A four-run sixth inning for the home team gave the lead back to the Vikings as North Park won with three groundouts in the ninth. 
 
  • In the second game against North Park, Mike Ciesla belted a solo home run in the second and a two-run homer in the fourth for a 3-0 score for the Firebirds. 
  • A flyout from Krekling scored Evan Devine doubling the Carthage advantage. 
  • North Park plated eight in the fifth and five in the seventh, winning the game 13-4. 
 
  • On Sunday, the Firebirds got on the board first as a double from Kody Krekling scored Cody Tostrud
  • Krekling later scored on a passed ball. 
  • Elmhurst responded with a seven-run second inning. 
  • Carthage got one back with an RBI single from Krekling. 
  • Following a lead-off triple from Matt Felber in the fourth, an RBI sac ground out by Cody Tostrud narrowed the margin to three. 
  • The Bluejays added a run off a wild pitch for an 8-4 score. 
  • Elmhurst registered four runs in the sixth, extending the lead to 12-4. 
  • The visitors won the game shutting out the Firebirds in the ninth. 

High Flyers
  • Chuckie Smith struck for a double in game one as Mike Ciesla hit his first two home runs of the season in game two against North Park on Saturday. 
  • In game two, PJ Moser belted a double, while Evan Devine had a triple. 
  • On the mound, Bryce Schaum fanned a season-best nine batters over seven innings in the opening doubleheader contest against North Park. 
  • Kody Krekling went 3-for-5 against Elmhurst on Sunday with two runs batted in. 
  • Matt Felber went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple.
