TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carthage College Red Men fell on Monday after a five-run ninth by the Buena Vista University Beavers doomed the Red Men in Arizona, 9-6.
Â
The loss drops the Red Men to 3-5 on the season, while Buena Vista improves to 6-5 in 2017.
Â
The Beavers jumped on starter
Kyle Damon for a run in the first, but Damon was able to settle in and held BVU to just the lone run until the sixth.
Â
The bats came alive in the fourth for the Red Men, as
Zach Wade singled down the left field line to score
Reed Hero and tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later
Alex Letto reached on an error that drove in Matt rave to give the Red Men their first lead of the day. Next,
A.J. Kaprelian hit a bases loaded doule to left scoring Ryan Rogers and Wade. A second error in the inning by the Beavers' shortstop off the bat of
Drew Korosic scored Letto to give the Red Men a 5-1 lead after four.
Â
After recording the first out in the sixth, three consecutive batters reached base and Damon was lifted for
Joe Sambucci. A double and sac fly off the reliever scored all three that were on base and cut the Red Men lead to one at 5-4. Damon's day ended being responsible for all four runs, three earned, through 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, two walks and striking out two in the no decision.
Â
The Red Men carried that lead into the ninth as Sambucci went 2.1 innings, not allowing a run on two hits before being replaced by
Alex Tinkoff.
Â
However, the Red Men were unraveled once again by a five-run ninth for the second day in a row by their opponent. The Beavers scored five times in the ninth off five hits to hand Tinkoff the loss on the day.
Â
The Red Men made a comeback attempt with a run in, in the ninth following a Wade RBI single to score Hero. The Red Men loaded the bases but were unable to score, sealing the 9-6 defeat.
Â
The Red Men will return to action in Tucson on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Luther College.
