The Carthage College baseball team (19-20, 11-10 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) opens play at the CCIW Baseball Tournament on Thursday, May 12 against top-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 27-12, 15-6 CCIW) in a 7 p.m. game at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Ill. The Red Men are the fourth-seeded team in the tournament. In Thursday's first game at 3:30 p.m., second-seeded and No. 13 North Central College (30-8, 15-6) trounced third-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (22-18, 13-8), 13-5.
The tournament continues on Friday, May 13 with games at Noon, 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and concludes on Saturday, May 14 with the championship round beginning at Noon. The winner of the event receives the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. Regional-championship play gets underway on Wednesday, May 18.
Webster University will play host to the Central Regional championship at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. GCS Ballpark, home to the Webster Gorloks since 2004, is located just across the Mississippi River from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo. The facility has a capacity of 6,000 fans with field box, bleacher and lawn seating. In 2005, GCS was named "Ballpark of the Year" by digitalballparks.com.
Wisconsin-La Crosse will be the host team for the Midwest Regional for the second-straight year at Copeland Park in La Crosse, Wis. Copeland Park, also referred to as "The Lumber Yard," is the home field of the La Crosse Loggers baseball team and seats 3,500.
Augustana (Ill.) and North Central (Ill.) shared this year's conference title. Augustana won the North Central series earlier in the year, giving the Vikings the tie-breaker for the top seed and the home field for the CCIW Baseball Tournament. Carthage won last year's conference tournament as a third seed.
