Baseball Wins the North Park Series with a 3-2 Decision on April 9

Red Men Open a Three-Game Set with Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday in Carol Stream, Ill.

Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (10-10, 4-5 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won the rubber game of a three-game series with CCIW-opponent North Park University (15-9, 6-3 CCIW), 3-2, on Wednesday, April 9 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The two teams split an April 1 doubleheader in Chicago. 
 
In Wednesday's contest, Carthage took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run stand-up triple by Brian Huntsinger and an RBI-single by Marc Mantucca.  That was all of the scoring until the top of the ninth inning when North Park scored two and threatened to add more.  With one out and reliever Sam Wilhelms on the hill, Joe Belmonte singled.  Dan Sabin followed with a single, sending pinch-runner Dan Anderson to second.  Brett Bernal singled in Anderson, with pinch-runner Nate Clarke out on the play at third base.  Mike Coduto singled in Bernal, with Coduto taking third base on a fielding error by centerfielder  Matt Cmiel on the play.  Wilhelms got Tyler Woolbright on a grounder to shortstop to end the game.
 
Alex Newberry (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 1-3) was the winning pitcher.  Newberry blanked the Vikings on five hits and no walks over seven innings, while striking out nine batters.  Sam Wilhelms (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) worked the final two innings to earn his fourth save.  Brian Huntsinger (Sr., Glendale, Wis./Milwaukee-Nicolet) led the Red Men with two hits in four trips with two RBI.
 
Carthage travels to Carol Stream, Ill., on Friday, April 11 to open a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 14-9, 4-5 CCIW) with a 6 p.m. game at Legion Field.  The two teams play a Saturday, April 12 doubleheader at Augie Schmidt Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
