Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (16-18, 7-11 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost the rubber game of a three-game series with CCIW-opponent and No. 36 Augustana College (Ill., 23-10, 12-6 CCIW), 12-1, on Sunday, April 27 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis. The two teams split a Saturday, April 26 doubleheader. Carthage won the first game, 4-0, before losing the nightcap by a 7-4 margin. Sunday's loss eliminated the Red Men from a berth in the May 8-10 CCIW Baseball Tournament. Carthage last qualified for the tournament in 2011.
A seven-run second inning did Carthage in. Augustana put the first six runners on base in the inning, starting with a leadoff walk issued by pitcher
Marc Mantucca, followed by five-straight singles and a costly error by shortstop
Drew Bailey. Carthage got a run back in the second inning on a solo home run by Mantucca. The Vikings added two runs in the third, the second of which came after the umpiring crew reversed a call that originally had Brandon Jasper out at first base on a slow roller to third. Jasper was sent back to first, and Jacob Van Duyne scored from second on the play for a 9-1 lead. Augustana scored three more runs in the sixth for the final, 12-1 margin, and the game was halted after seven innings due to a 10-run rule.
The Vikings pounded out 17 hits off three Red Men hurlers. Seven Vikings had at least two hits, with Jacques Camalick leading the way with three hits in four trips to the plate. Walter White (5-0) went the distance in the seven-inning game and allowed just one run on eight hits and no walks.
Marc Mantucca (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central, 1-4) took the loss and gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and two walks in the first two innings.
Alex Newberry worked the middle three innings and surrendered five runs, with
Jake Jewell working the final two frames. Mantucca and
Graham Wick both had two hits.
