Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (15-14, 6-9 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) defeated non-conference opponent Aurora University (10-24), 4-1, on Wednesday, April 23 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Carthage jumped on Aurora starting pitcher Christian Smith for two runs in the first inning.  Mike Pugliese scored on a wild pitch, and Marc Mantucca delivered an RBI-single.  Pugliese's two-out, two-run double in the second inning made it 4-0.

Carthage pitcher Alex Newberry saw his no-hit bid broken up by the No. 9 hitter, Adam Lipscomb, who blooped a double in front of Red Men leftfielder Matt Richer to lead off the sixth inning.  Newberry had walked two and hit two batters prior to Lipscomb's double.  The Spartans got on the scoreboard in the seventh when Jared Swain reached on a fielding error by third baseman Zach Wade, advanced to second on a grounder, and scored on a single by Zach Flores that Red Men leftfielder Anthony Fortunato bobbled, allowing Swain to score an unearned run.

Alex Newberry (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 3-3) was dominant in a complete-game effort that took a nifty one-hour and 59 minutes.  He allowed only Lipscomb's bloop double in the sixth and the single by Flores in the seventh, walked two and struck out eight batters.  In his last three starts over 22 innings, Newberry has not allowed an earned run and has struck out 19 batters after starting the season with an 0-3 mark.  Christian Smith (0-2), the first-of-five Spartan hurlers, took the loss.  Matt Richer and Marc Mantucca each had two hits for the Red Men.

In a schedule note, Carthage has added a home, non-conference doubleheader to its schedule on Thursday, April 24 with Marian University (Wis., 12-11), beginning at 2 p.m.
