Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (14-11, 6-6 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) defeated non-conference opponent Rockford University (13-12), 3-1, on Thursday, April 17 at Aviators Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.
Carthage broke a scoreless tie with a run in the seventh inning when
Matt Richer scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch. The Red Men made it a 3-0 game in the top of the ninth.
Andy Jaskolski scored as a result of a Regents throwing error on a bunt play, and
Luke Mentkowski singled in a run. Carthage had two other runners thrown out at the plate in the inning. Rockford scored a run in the bottom half to close out the scoring at 3-1.
Alex Newberry (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 2-3) won his second-straight outing by blanking the Regents on four hits and four walks over the first six innings,
Sam Burnett worked the seventh and eighth innings, and
Sam Wilhelms (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) picked up his Carthage-record seventh save of the season, despite giving up a one on two hits in the ninth inning. Wilhelms broke a record of six saves set by Layne Grissman in 1995 and matched by Brandon Roth in 2002. Wilhelms is now just one save away from the Red Men's career mark of 12 saves set by Eric Wnuck between 1988 and 1991.
Michael Kiviranta (1-1) took the loss despite limiting Carthage to one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings.
Marc Mantucca (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central) had two of the Red Men's seven hits.
Carthage opens a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (8-17, 3-9 CCIW) on Good Friday, April 18 by playing the Bluejays in a Noon doubleheader at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill. The two teams conclude the series with a Noon single game on Saturday, April 19 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
