Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (2-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) split a pair of game on Saturday, March 15 l at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Art Nehf Field in Terre Haute, Ind. Carthage lost to No. 16 Concordia University (Ill., 9-2), 7-4, on Saturday afternoon, before blanking Alma College (6-4), 3-0, under the lights on Saturday night.
In the first game, the Cougars broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run seventh inning off Red Men relief pitcher

Andrew Arenson started the game and limited Concordia (Ill.) to one run on four hits over the first five innings. Carthage scored twice in the eighth on a two-run double by Michael Merritt to cut the lead to 5-4, but the Cougars tacked on two more runs in the ninth for the final, 7-4 margin. C.J. Selner (2-1) was the winning pitcher, and he allowed by two runs on seven hits over six and one-third innings. Steve Cox pitched the final inning and a third to pick up the save.
Marc Mantucca led the Red Men with three hits in five trips to the plate.
In the Alma contest,
Matt Richer doubled in a run, and
Mike Farias singled in another in the third inning, as the Red Men took a 2-0 lead. Farias singled in another run in the fifth to give Carthage a 3-0 lead. Three Carthage pitcher combined on a seven-hit shutout.
Josh Daniels (Sr., Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove, 1-0) worked the first five innings and blanked the Scots on three hits and three walks.
Jeremy Salzman (Sr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) worked the sixth and seventh frames, with
Sam Wilhelms entering the game in the eighth inning to preserve the shutout and earn his first save of the season. Colin Nash (1-1) took the loss.
Drew Bailey (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went three-for-five with an RBI to lead the Carthage attack.
The Red Men were scheduled to play Rose-Hulman on Sunday, along with a second game against Alma, but both of those contests were canceled due to an expected snow storm on Sunday.
Carthage opens a seven-game trip to the Tucson Spring Invitational on Friday, March 21 by playing Gustavus Adolphus College in a 7:30 p.m. game (all times MST) at the Kino Sports Complex Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. On Saturday, March 22, the Red Men take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College at 9 a.m. and California Lutheran University at 1 p.m. On Sunday, March 23, Carthage meets Buena Vista University at 3 p.m., followed by a Monday, March 24 contest with Carleton College at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, March 25, the Red Men play Middlebury College at 9 a.m., with the trip ending with a 9 a.m. contest against Luther College on Wednesday, March 26.
