Red Men Travel to Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday-Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (1-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) opened its 2014 season on Sunday, March 9 by splitting a doubleheader with Fontbonne University (1-1) at Seckman High School in Imperial, Mo.  The Red Men won the opening game, 4-2, before losing the nightcap, 4-2.
 
In the opening game, starting pitcher Andrew Arenson (Sr., Naperville, Ill./North, 1-0) and reliever Alex Newberry (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) blanked Fontbonne on three hits over the first seven innings.  Sam Wilhelms worked the final two innings.  Carter (0-1) took the loss for the Griffins.  The Red Men scored all their runs in the first four innings.  Mike Farias hit an RBI-single in the second inning, Nick Schmidlkofer a two-run single in the third and Zach Wade an RBI-single in the fourth.  Wade went three-for-four.
 
In the nightcap, Fontbonne scored three times in the eighth inning to erase a 2-1 Carthage lead.  A two-run single by Alex Hill and a costly error by rightfielder Sean Carroll accounted for those three runs.  Jake Jewell (0-1), in relief of Josh Daniels and Jeremy Salzmann, took the loss.  Griffins starting pitcher Jacob Becker (1-0) hurled a nine-inning complete game, stopping the Red Men on four hits and a walk, while striking out five batters.  Sean Carroll went two-for-four with an RBI.

Carthage travels to Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday-Sunday, March 15-16 to play four games at Indiana State University's Bob Warn Stadium.  On Saturday, March 15, Carthage plays Concordia University (Ill.) at 11 a.m. (all times EDT) and Alma College at 3 p.m.  On Sunday, March 16, the Red Men take on Alma at 11 a.m. and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.
