Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (17-23, 9-12 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out its 2013 season on Sunday, May 5 by losing both ends of a doubleheader with non-conference opponent the University of Chicago (23-12), 3-1 and 4-0, at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a two-run double by Jack Cinoman. Carthage made it 2-1 in the second on an RBI-single by
Sean Carroll, but the Maroons tacked on a another run in the seventh on an RBI-double by Brett Huff for the final, 3-1 margin.
Matt O'Connor (5-2) was the winning pitcher and limited the Red Men to one unearned run on five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Mitch Lochen (Sr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South, 3-3) took the loss and gave up three runs on seven hits and no walks over six innings, with Raymond Wojciechowski finishing up in the seventh inning.
Sean Carroll (So., New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) went two-for-three with an RBI for the Red Men.
The second game started out as a pitcher's duel between Carthage's Sam Burnett (Fr., Hinsdale, Ill./Central, 1-2) and Chicago's Lucas Friss. After four scoreless innings, the Maroons broke through a run in the fifth on an RBI-double by Jack Cinoman. Chicago scored three times in the sixth on three singles and a dropped outfield fly ball to take a 4-0 lead. Burnett went five innings and allowed one run on five hits and a walk.
Marc Mantucca (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Central) took over in the sixth and
Weston Peterson (Jr., Barneveld, Wis.) in the seventh. Lucas Friss (4-0) was the winning pitcher.
