Red Men Play Host to Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday

Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (16-19, 8-10 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to non-conference opponent Concordia University (Wis., 13-24), 4-3, on Wednesday night, May 1 at Kapco Field in Mequon, Wis.  The two teams also played on Tuesday night, April 30 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis., with Red Men winning a 7-1 contest.
 
Wednesday's game started out as a pitcher's duel between Carthage's Raymond Wojciechowski (Fr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) and Concordia's Michael Klaver.  Carthage managed only three hits off Klaver through the first innings, and Concordia had only two hits off Wojciechowski. 

The Red Men finally broke through in the sixth with RBI-singles by Marc Mantucca and Drew Bailey to take a 2-0 lead.  The Falcons got both runs back in the bottom half on an RBI-double by Joel Sharon and a run-scoring single by Blake Barker.  Wojciechowski gave way to Sam Burnett (Fr., Hinsdale, Ill./Central) in the seventh, and Concordia took a 4-2 lead in the inning when Beau Burgert singled in a run and a second run scored on an outfield error.  Carthage put two runners on with no outs in the top of the ninth, and Tanner Wensman scored on an infield throwing error.  Stevo Kraynak also attempted to scored on the play but was gunned down at the plate.  Matt Cmiel flied out and Nick Schmidlkofer struck out to end the game.
 
Ty Wester (2-1), the third-of-three Falcon hurlers, was the winner, with Sam Burnett (1-1) taking the loss.  Stevo Kraynak and Drew Bailey each had two hits for the Red Men.
 
On Friday, May 3, the Red Men open a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 12-23, 8-10 CCIW) by playing host to the Thunder in a 3 p.m. game at Augie Schmidt Field.  On Saturday, May 4, the two teams conclude the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Legion Field in Carol Stream, Ill.
