Baseball Concludes a Series Sweep of Elmhurst, 8-7 in 10 innings, on April 21

Red Men Travel to Aurora University on Tuesday

Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (15-14, 8-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) completed a three-game sweep of CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (12-14, 4-9 CCIW) with an 8-7 win in 10 innings on Sunday, April 21 at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill. 

The Red Men got to .500 for the first time since the season's opening weekend by sweeping a Saturday, April 20 doubleheader, 3-0 and 7-0, at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  Carthage is in fourth place in the CCIW, one game ahead of fifth-place Wheaton College (Ill., 10-18, 6-7 CCIW).
 
In the series finale, Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI-single by Drew Bailey.  Elmhurst scored five times in the fourth inning off starting pitcher Marc Mantucca (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Central).  Joe Kennedy hit a two-run double and Luke Collins a three-run homer in the inning.  The Red Men cut the lead to 5-3 in the fifth on RBI-singles by Mike Merritt and Stevo Kraynak. 

The Bluejays came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half to make it 7-3.  Carthage closed to within a run, 7-6, thanks to a three-run double by Bailey.  The Red Men tied the game, 7-7, in the top of the ninth on an RBI-double by Tanner WensmanNick Schmidlkofer (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego) led off the 10th inning with a solo home run to give Carthage the 8-7 lead. 
 
Pitcher Sam Wilhelms (Jr., Fond du Lac, Wis., 3-3) picked up the win in relief of Mantucca and Jake Jewell by blanking the Blue Jays on two hits over the final two innings.  Erik Swanson (3-2), the third-of-three Elmhurst pitchers, took the loss.  Stevo Kraynak (Jr., Hinsdale, Ill./Central) went four-for-five with an RBI and Drew Bailey (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) three-for-five with a double and four RBI. 

Carthage travels to Aurora, Ill., on Tuesday, April 23 to play non-conference opponent Aurora University (18-9) in a 3 p.m. game at Joe Bernard Field at Solfisburg Park.
