Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (12-14, 5-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Tuesday, April 16 doubleheader from Lakeland College (7-12), 4-0 and 8-3, at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Lakeland set was originally scheduled for Muskie Field in Howards Grove, Wis.
In the opening game, Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by
Kyle Pusateri. The Red Men scored three times in the third to go up, 4-0.
Mike Merritt hit an RBI-double,
Drew Bailey and RBI-grounder and
Tanner Wensman a run-scoring single. That was more than enough support for pitcher
Andrew Arenson (Jr., Naperville, Ill./North, 1-1), who twirled Carthage's first solo no-hitter since Jason Wiertel no-hit Kalamazoo College on March 19, 1999.
Brett McQuade and Bryan Kieffer combined on a no-hitter of Marian University (Wis.) on April 27, 2010.
Arenson allowed just one base runner, a walk to Luke Bacci with two outs in the sixth inning, and he struck out 10 batters over the seven-inning game. Brett Bittner (0-1) took the loss.
Tanner Wensman (Jr., Oconomowoc, Wis.) went two-for-three with an RBI.
In the nightcap,
Kyle Pusateri's RBI-single got Carthage on the board in the first inning.
Drew Bailey's RBI-double and a
Tanner Wensman RBI-single in the second made it 3-0. The Red Men made it 5-0 in the third when
Brian Huntsinger tripled in a run and scored on a wild pitch. The Muskies scored twice in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2, but a
Matt Richer sacrifice fly in the bottom half made it 6-2. The Red Men added two runs in the seventh on an infield error and a bases-loaded walk to
Mike Gentile. Lakeland scored a single run in the ninth for the final, 8-3 margin.
Pitcher Sam Burnett (Fr., Hinsdale, Ill./Central, 1-0) started the game and went the first five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. Kurtis Ligocki (Fr., Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) relieved in the sixth and Eddie Gengo Jr (Fr., Western Springs, Ill./La Grange-Nazareth Academy) in the eighth. Max Kramsky (0-1), the first-of-three Muskie hurlers, took the loss.
Tanner Wensman and
Kyle Pusateri each went two-for-five with an RBI.
On Saturday, April 20, the Red Men open a three-game set with CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College by playing host to the Bluejays in a Noon twinbill at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis. The two teams conclude the series with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday, April 21 at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill.
