Firebirds Stitch Together Seventh Place Finish at Midwest Elite Invitational

WHITEWATER - The Carthage men's track and field team returned to action this week at the Midwest Elite Invitational at Wis-Whitewater on Friday and Saturday. The Firebirds fought hard across all events and earned a seventh place team finish where they were powered by strong performances from their distance and throws squads.

The Firebirds placed seventh overall out of fourteen collegiate teams with 55.5 points. Wis.- Oshkosh won the meet with 129 points, Wis-Stevens Point finished second with 97.5 points. Wis-Whitewater scored 84 team points, while WashU placed fourth at 76 points. Wis-La Crosse finished fifth with 69 points and Loras finished just ahead of Carthage with 61 points.

Sprints

Mac Anderson finished seventh in the 200 meter dash with an indoor personal best time of 22.63 seconds. Anderson also ran 7.05 in the 60m prelim, which marked one of the top times in the CCIW this season.

Dylan Parker placed eighth in the 400 meter dash where he tied his personal best of 50.84.

Distance

26 team points came from the 3000 meter run with the Firebirds going second through sixth in the event. Connor Wood led the way in a personal best time of 9:06.25. Luke Davey was next in 9:10.82 and Chad Helmke ran a personal best of 9:14.55 for fourth. Charles Fitts and Andrew Schaer rounded out the squad with times of 9:46.46 and 10:09.50 respectively.

Jumps

Layne Rund placed sixth with a personal best mark of 1.86 meters in the high jump.

Throws

The Firebirds performed strongly in the weight throw with Lucas Leal and Tyler Rose placing second and third respectively with marks of 18.89 and 17.58 meters. Jacob Brost threw a personal best mark of 17.06 meter, placing sixth in the event.

Rose threw a personal best of 15.00 meters to finish fifth in the shot put.

Brost moves into the top 50 in NCAA Division III in the weight throw with a mark of 17.06m. He entered the top five in the CCIW in the event, joining teammates Leal (first) and Rose (second).
Anderson enters the top ten on the Carthage all-time performance lists in the 200m with a time of 22.63. He claims the 10th place spot from David Rogers, who ran 22.72 at the Aurora Grand Prix in 2022. He moved up to seventh place in the CCIW in the event with a converted time of 22.24. He also moved into 10th in the CCIW in the 60m with a time of 7.05 seconds.
Parker moved up to sixth in the 400m for the CCIW with a converted time of 50.05 seconds.
Rund jumped to seventh place in the CCIW for the high jump with his mark of 1.86m.
Rose ranks fourth in the CCIW in shot put with his throw of 15.00m.
Michael Herres moved up to fourth place in the CCIW in the 800m with a converted time of 1:56.74. Michael Barber ranks 10th at 1:58.80 and LJ Higgs is ranked 13th at 1:59.11.

"I would rate this week 1 1/2 thumbs up," said Head Coach Josh Henry. "We have put in a lot of great work this season but have too many self imposed wounds on meet day. It feels like we're cutting ourselves short by not controlling the controllables. Our focus after the meet was to be more intentional with the details and meet preparation. In so many areas we're close to great things, but we need to position ourselves better over the next month to realize our full potential as a team."

Carthage men's track & field returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 as the team travels just north of campus to compete in the Parkside Classic hosted by Wis-Parkside.
