Women’s Track and Field Soars to a Second Place Finish at the Ripon Hawk Opener

RIPON – The Carthage women's track and field team traveled to Ripon, Wis. Friday afternoon for the Ripon Hawk Opener. The Firebirds competed hard against a field of four teams, resulting in a second place finish.

The Firebirds took second place, scoring 130 points. St. Norbert scored 203 points taking first place. Lawrence and Ripon took third and fourth place with 97 and 71 points. 
 
Who Led the Way

Sprints

In the 60 meter hurdles Julia Kraus finished third running a time of 10.57 for six points on the Firebirds scoreboard.

Carthage had two Firebirds score in the 60 meter dash. Anna Kegel placed second clocking in a time of 8.17. Marisa Serpico placed fifth with a time of 8.66. 

Sarah Kerfin finished in a time of 28.34 for a seventh place finish in the 200 meter dash, scoring 2 points for the Firebirds. 

Distance

Kaitlyn Jerbi led the Firebirds distance squad in the mile, scoring two points with a seventh place finish and clocking in a time of 5:45.50.

In the 800 meter run Kristin Farabaugh clocked in a time of 2:28.06 for a third place finish, scoring six points for the Firebirds.

Jumps

Carthage had four Firebirds score in the long jump. Christina Hall took the crown with a jump of 5.51 meters. Behind Hall, Teagan Johnston and Anna Kegel took second and third with jumps of 5.19 meters and 4.97 meters. Grace Nisius placed seventh with a jump of 4.75 meters.

Abbey Calhoun grabbed the crown in the triple jump scoring nine points, jumping 11.81 meters.

Johnston took the gold in the high jump with a jump of 1.57 meters. Nisius placed seventh scoring two points for the Firebirds with a jump of 1.37m.

Throws

Carthage swept the shot put taking first through sixth place. Madison Payne took first place with a throw of 12.60 meters. Mikayla Wright and Jackie Tuzil took second and third with throws of 12.51 meters and 12.06 meters. Makensie Pearson, Lillian Townsend, and Ava Freund took fourth, fifth, and sixth place with throws of 11.56 meters, 11.24 meters, and 10.66 meters.

In the weight throw, Carthage had five Firebirds score. The Firebirds took first and second with throws of 16.90 meters and 15.14 meters by Nicole Tarpley and Payne. Tuzil, Wright, and Townsend rounded out the top eight with fifth, sixth, and seventh place.


High Flyers

Serpico set a personal best in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.56.

In the long jump, Johnston set a personal best with a jump of 5.19 meters.

Freund threw a personal best in the shot put with 10.66 meters.

The Firebirds will be back in action Saturday, February 1, where they will travel to Whitewater, Wis. to compete in the Leonard Squig Converse hosted by UW-Whitewater.
