ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The 2022-2023 season has come to a close for the Carthage Firebirds women's track & field team, as senior thrower Alexis Mattox recorded a strong 12th-place national finish in the hammer throw at the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 

Mattox, an experienced thrower from Kenosha, Wisconsin, jumped up nine spots from her initial seeding to finish 12th. Originally seeded 21st, the Kenosha native's first throw of the day was exceptional - traveling 51.98m to vault her up the standings. After fouling out of last year's outdoor championships, Mattox performed admirably in the circle Saturday morning to bring Carthage's season to a close. 

Today's performance from Mattox followed 16th and ninth-place finishes in the discus and shot put from junior Aubrey Schoeneman over the last two days, respectively. 





"Alexis had a great day after battling some mental adversity this past week. She came into the competition confident and ready to go and it showed with one of the best marks of her season. The goal was to be aggressive and go for it coming in at No. 21 and she did just that finishing 12th. This weekend was a good learning experience for Lex and will help her to reach her true potential next year on bigger stages. I'm excited that she will be coming back for another year as she works toward her masters at Carthage," remarked Carthage Firebirds assistant track & field coach Greg Raimondi. 

"Aubrey and Lex had outstanding performances at the NCAA Championship. They competed with confidence and were ready to compete with these talented fields. Each time they compete at this level, they gain more experience and improve. I am excited about their progression and looking forward to them both completing next year and being leaders on the team," added Carthage College head women's track & field coach Stephanie Domin.
