Firebirds Win Three More Individual Titles, Finish Fourth at CCIW Championship

2/26/2022 8:06:00 PM

KENOSHA, Wis. — Behind three additional individual conference crowns today, the Carthage men's track and field team took fourth place at the CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championship meet on Saturday at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center. Joseph White claimed the weight throw title, Alex Jarvis the championship in the triple jump, and Craig Hundley II won the mile. White was also named the CCIW Men's Field Athlete of the Meet.

Holding a lead midway through the day, the Firebirds finished with 94 total points, just behind Wheaton in third and Augustana in second. North Central won the team title after accumulating 135.5 points.

The Firebirds earned six-all-conference awards: White in the weight throw and shot put, Hundley II in the mile, Jarvis in the triple jump, Adam Kedzior in the heptathlon, and Cody Canegan in the 400.

Up next for Carthage is the Firebird Finale, which will take place next Friday, March 4 at 3 p.m. in the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center.

Head Coach Josh Henry

"This meet was definitely bittersweet for us. The team really competed hard and I am proud of all of them. You could tell each and every student-athlete really put everything they had into this weekend. The individual results were impressive. We had some huge accomplishments as a program and a lot of lifetime best performances. The bitter part is where we fell in the team standings. Fourth is not where we wanted to be and for much of the day it appeared that we had a legitimate shot to finish second. However, a few things didn't go our way in the final events and we couldn't quite seal the deal. Credit to Wheaton, Augustana, and North Central who had great meets. The CCIW has incredible coaching staffs, paired with talented student-athletes, so success is certainly earned in this conference. That's what makes the individual accomplishments such as Joseph's Field Athlete of the Meet award, or the individual event titles in the shot, weight, mile, and triple jump, truly special."

Highlights

  • Craig Hundley II won his first CCIW title today in the mile run, crossing the finish line in 4:15.05, Carthage's first-ever CCIW title in the event.
