Competing in two different meets across a two-day span, the men's and women's track and field teams put up their final marks of the regular season on Wednesday and Thursday at the Gregory Final Qualifier and Augie Twilight.
"Overall we saw great efforts from the small squads that we brought to North Central and Augustana," said men's head coach
Josh Henry. "The warm weather the last two days created the ideal sprint conditions we've been looking for all season, but was a tough adjustment for the distance crew with little time to acclimate."
On Wednesday at the Gregory Final Qualifier on the campus of North Central, Micah Anderson and Peyton Heiser ran in the men's 5,000-meter run, placing sixth and eighth respectively. In the discus, Joseph White threw 40.49 meters to place sixth before taking 11th in the hammer throw on a toss of 42.89. Competing in the men's hammer as well, Matthew Ausse took fourth place with a mark of 52.66 meters.
The men's team competed on Thursday at North Central as well, as Mason Tucker placed 10th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.14 seconds before taking eighth in the 200 at 22.41. In the 400, Cody Canegan placed third after crossing the finish line in 49.49 seconds, before Michael Barber posted a time of 2:00.01 in the 800, placing ninth. Topher Davis and Chase Upmann competed in the men's 1,500 as well, placing 11th and 13th, respectively.
"Our biggest improvement came from Mason in the 200," said Henry. "Matt and Joseph have also shown consistency in their throwing marks, coming close to season bests. Both are currently sitting on the bubble to make the NCAA meet in a year where the field sizes have been reduced. Now we wait to see the rest of the results from across the country and hope Matt and Joseph get good news on Friday."
On the women's side, Cailey Ciezadlo ran in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 12.30 seconds, before taking second in the 200 on a personal-best time of 24.94 seconds.
"We are very excited about Cailey's performance tonight," said women's head coach
Stephanie Domin. "She put her all into the race and put herself in a great position. Now we wait for the NCAA selection!"
The men wrapped up their 2021 outdoor regular season at the Augie Twilight on Thursday as well, as White posted a mark of 49.01 in the discus, before Ausse threw just over 53 meters in the hammer.
