Indoor Season Comes to End at CCIW Elite Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Carthage track and field teams competed in their final event of the 2021 indoor season among some of the best student-athletes in the conference at the CCIW Elite Invitational on Saturday at the Shirk Center Fieldhouse.

Alexis Mattox took fourth place in both the weight throw and shot put with marks of 15.50 meters and 12.16 meters, respectively, while Hannah Lizano placed sixth in the weight throw. In the high jump, Aubrey Tesch cleared her first two heights on her first attempt, before eventually clearing the bar at 1.56 meters to take first place.

Competing in the mile, freshman Lily Majestic took seventh on a time of 5:43.77. In the 200-meter dash, Cailey Ciezadlo set a personal best with a time of 26.21 seconds to take second place overall after winning her heat.

"The Carthage women's track and field team finished the indoor season on a high note at the CCIW Elite Meet," said women's head coach Stephanie Domin. "Seniors Aubrey Tesch, and Cailey Ciezadlo had outstanding days. All the women competed well and had a great experience at this meet, and we are looking forward to keeping the momentum going into the outdoor season."

In the afternoon, the men began with a fourth-place finish in the weight throw by Matthew Ausse on a toss of 16.96 meters. Alex Pitrone would take third in the shot put for the Firebirds, throwing 14.79 meters on his third attempt.

Connor Bell placed sixth in the high jump after clearing 1.77 meters, before taking seventh in the hurdles. In the triple jump, Edelmar Morales-Rivera placed fourth after leaping 12.89 meters.

In the distance events, Micah Anderson took seventh in the 5,000 before Cameron Fischer placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:27.36. Freshman Craig Hundley placed fourth in the 3,000 with a time of 8:51.24, while Thomas Olenek took seventh.

"I'm really proud of how the guys competed today," said men's head coach Josh Henry. "We had outstanding performances and lifetime bests all over the place."

Alassane Guisse finished just behind Bell in the 60-meter hurdles in eighth with a time of 9.25 seconds, while David Rogers took fifth in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Senior Cody Canegan set a personal best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.52, taking third overall.

Topher Davis placed eighth in the 800 on a time of 2:02.86, while the distance medley relay team of Fischer, Canegan, Michael Barber, and Peyton Heiser placed fourth with a time of 10:44.63.

"I would list off highlights but it seems nearly everyone who made the trip had an excellent day," said Henry. "I couldn't be more happy with where we are at as a team right now, and am excited to move into the outdoor season."
