Baseball Drops the Opener of the North Central Series, 8-2, on May 2

Red Men Conclude the 2014 Season with a Saturday Twinbill in Naperville, Ill.

Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (18-19, 7-12 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) opened a three-game series with CCIW-opponent North Central College (24-11, 12-7 CCIW) on Friday, May 2 with an 8-2 loss to the Cardinals at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The two teams conclude the series with a Saturday, May 3 twinbill at Zimmerman Stadium/Alumni Field, beginning at Noon.  The Saturday doubleheader will conclude Carthage's season.
 
North Central jumped on Carthage starting pitcher Andrew Arenson for five runs in the top of the first inning.  Sam Klein singled in the first run.  The Cardinal proceeded to load the bases before Zac Pacanowski unloaded a grand-slam home run to rightfield.  The Red Men scored twice in the fourth on RBI-doubles by Marc Mantucca and Nick Schmdlkofer.  North Central added single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth for the final, 8-2 margin.
 
Starting pitcher Ben Krusen (6-2) went the distance for the Cardinals and limited the Red Men to two runs on seven hits, a walk and seven strikeouts over nine innings.  Andrew Arenson (Sr., Naperville, Ill./North, 3-3) took the loss.  Arenson surrendered seven runs on nine hits, five walks and 10 strikeouts.  Marc Mantucca and Nick Schmdlkofer had two hits for the Red Men.  Matt Richer (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) was hit by a pitch twice and tied Ryan Lessner's 2000 season record of 23 hit-by-pitches.
