Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (9-10, 3-5 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won the rubber game of a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Millikin University (5-15, 1-7 CCIW), 15-2, on Sunday April 6 at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Ill. The two teams split a Saturday, April 5 doubleheader. The Red Men won the first game, 6-1, but the Big Blue scored two late runs to take the nightcap, 7-6 in 11 innings.
In Sunday's finale, Carthage had a 4-1 lead after four innings and a 7-2 spread after six. The Red Men broke the game open with an eight-run explosion in the eighth inning. Carthage collected 19 hits, 10 of those for extra bases, including nine doubles.
Jake Erfourth (Fr., St. Francis, Wis./Mequon-Homestead) went four-for-five with four runs scored and three doubles.
Matt Richer (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) went three-for-four with two doubles, a triple and six RBI.
Mike Merritt (Sr., Racine, Wis./Lutheran) had three hits in four trips to the plate with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI, and
Drew Bailey (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went three-for-five.
Pitcher
Marc Mantucca (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central, 1-1) was the beneficiary on the onslaught. Mantucca allowed two runs, one earned, over six innings on four hits and three walks. John Steele (0-2), the first-of-six Big Blue hurlers, took the loss.
Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent North Park University (15-8, 6-2 CCIW) on Wednesday, April 9 in a 3 p.m. game at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
