Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (15-16, 6-9 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) lost both ends of a Thursday, April 24 non-conference doubleheader to Marian University (Wis., 14-11), 12-7 and 9-3, at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
After Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, Marian plated seven runs in the second, including a two-run home run by Casey Seelow, a two-run single by Jordan DeBoer and a two-run homer by Chad Langley. The Red Men got a run back in the third, but DeBoer's RBI-double in the fourth made it an 8-2 game. Carthage scored four times in the fifth to narrow the gap to 8-6. Stevo Kraynak singled in a run, and
Marc Mantucca followed with a three-run homer. The two teams traded run s in the sixth, but Matt Bromley hit a three-run homer in the seventh to put the Sabres up by five, 12-7, to close out the scoring.
Trevor Nicholson (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Marian despite giving up six runs on nine hits over five innings. Austin Hansen worked the final inning and two-thirds for his second save.
Tim Sulik (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI, 2-2) took the loss by surrendering the first eight runs on seven hits and five walks over five innings.
Marc Mantucca (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central) led the Red Men by going two-for-four with three RBI.
The Sabres took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap. Marian tacked on four more runs in the third off starting pitcher
Sam Burnett (So., Hinsdale, Ill./Central, 0-2). Tommy Dugandzic had the big hit in the inning, a two-run single. Burnett gave up six runs on five hits and five walks over the first two and one-third innings. The Sabres added two more runs in the fifth to make it 8-0 and one more in the seventh for a 9-0 lead. Carthage got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring at 9-3. Hunter Veness (1-0) was the winning pitcher with a complete-game effort. Veness allowed three runs on four hits and three walks. Five other Red Men hurlers followed Burnett.
On Saturday-Sunday, April 26-27, the Red Men play host to CCIW-opponent and No. 36 Augustana College (Ill.) in a three-game series, also at Augie Schmidt Field. The Red Men and the Vikings play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m., followed by a single game at Noon on Sunday, April 27.
