Box Score 2 Good Friday it was not. Elmhurst College (10-17, 5-9 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) threw a roadblock in front of the Carthage College baseball team's hopes for a berth in the CCIW Baseball Tournament by sweeping a doubleheader from the Red Men (14-13, 6-8 CCIW) at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst, Ill. The Bluejays won the first game, 7-2, and took the nightcap by a 7-1 margin. Elmhurst last swept Carthage in a doubleheader in 2004. The two teams conclude the three-game series with a Noon single game on Saturday, April 19 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage is now in sixth place in the league, a full game behind both Wheaton College (Ill., 7-7) and North Central College (6-6), tied for fourth place
In the opener, Elmhurst took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on three hits and a pair of infield errors. Eric Stevenson had the big blow, a two-run single off starting pitcher
Andrew Arenson. Carthage got two runs back in the fourth inning on a
Zach Wade RBI-single and a bases-loaded walk to
Matt Richer. The Bluejays went up, 6-2, in the fifth. Stevenson singled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch from Arenson, and A.J. Compton followed with an RBI-single. The Red Men's third infield error of the game led to an Elmhurst run in the eighth and the final, 7-2 margin.
Elmhurst pitcher Jordan Hanlon (2-4) stopped the Red Men with a complete-game effort, allowing two runs on five hits, four walks and eight strikeouts.
Andrew Arenson (Sr., Naperville, Ill./North, 3-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He allowed six runs, three earned, on nine hits over six innings. The Bluejays' Ben Havel went five-for-five with three runs scored, while Carthage's
Mike Pugliese (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Wheaton-St. Francis) went two-for-two.
In the second game, Elmhurst jumped on Carthage pitcher
Josh Daniels with a three-spot in the second inning of the nightcap. The Bluejays scored on RBI-singles by Chris Fisher and Eric Stevenson, along with a throwing error by right fielder
Brian Huntsinger that led to another run. The Red Men got a run back in the third on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of
Matt Richer. An RBI-single by Zach Tsiodras and a sacrifice fly by Greg Struck in the bottom of the third made it 5-1 Bluejays. The Bluejays went up, 7-1, in the fourth on a two-run double by Dave Wolak that closed out the scoring.
Elmhurst got a second complete-game effort from Ryan Millan (2-2) in the nightcap. Millan limited Carthage to one run on seven hits, no walks and five strikeouts over nine innings.
Josh Daniels (Sr., Elk Grove, Ill., 2-2) took the loss. Daniels gave up the first six runs, five earned, on seven hits and walk.
Tim Sulik (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) shut down the Bluejays over the middle four innings on one run and four hits, with Colin Dresen pitching the ninth inning.
Zach Wade (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) had two of the Red Men's seven hits.
