Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (12-11, 6-6 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won the Friday-Saturday, April 11-12 series with CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 15-11, 5-7 CCIW) by splitting a Saturday, April 12 doubleheader at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage won Saturday's opening game, 5-2, before losing the nightcap by a 5-0 margin. The two teams opened the series on Friday night, April 11 with the Red Men coming from behind to take an 8-5 decision over the Thunder at Lee Pfund Stadium at Legion Field in Carol Stream, Ill. With the win on Friday, the Red Men got over the .500 mark, overall, for the first time this season.

Matt Cmiel. Carthage took a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run double by
Drew Bailey. A bobbled transfer at second base on a double-play attempt proved costly for the Thunder in the sixth, as
Matt Richer delivered a two-out, two-run single to put Carthage up, 5-2, and that closed out the scoring.
Josh Daniels (Sr., Elk Grove, Ill., 2-1) was the winning pitcher and allowed just two runs, one earned, on 10 hits and walk.
Sam Wilhelms (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) entered the game in the ninth and threw just nine pitches to earn his sixth save, which tied a Carthage season record set by Layne Grissman in 1995 and matched by Brandon Roth in 2002. Michael Kaufman (0-1) took the loss for the Thunder.
Matt Richer (Sr., Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) and
Drew Bailey (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) both went two-for-four with two RBIs each.
In the nightcap, Wheaton's Trey Martin broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Martin hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to make it a 2-0 game. The Thunder tacked on three late runs in the ninth for the final, 5-0 margin. Johnny Peltz hit a two-run double in the ninth, and Matt Krause followed with an RBI-single.
Trey Martin (3-2) was the winning pitcher, as he twirled a complete-game, five-hit shutout, walking three over nine innings and striking out seven batters.
Marc Mantucca (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central, 1-2) took the loss despite giving up just one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings.
Drew Bailey had two of Carthage's five hits.
Carthage is scheduled to travel to Chicago on Sunday, April 13 to play the University of Chicago in a 1 p.m. game at J. Kyle Anderson Field. The Sunday weather forecast for Chicago calls for a 90 percent chance of precipitation. On Tuesday, April 15, the Red Men travel to Loves Park, Ill., on Tuesday, April 15 for a 3 p.m. non-conference game versus Rockford University at Aviators Stadium.
