Box Score 2 The Carthage College baseball team (7-9, 1-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) split a Tuesday, April 1 doubleheader with CCIW-opponent North Park University (13-7, 4-1 CCIW) at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago. North Park won the first game, 10-6, but Carthage hung on to take the nightcap, 16-15, in 10 innings.
In the opening game, North Park built a 6-2 lead after three innings. A three-run double by the Vikings' Mike Coduto in the fifth put North Park up by six runs, 9-3. Carthage's
Brian Huntsinger hit a two-run home run in the sixth to make it 9-5. Tommy Endress homered for the Vikings in the seventh to make it a 10-5 game, and Huntsinger, who went three-for-four with three RBI, doubled in a run in the eighth to close out the scoring at 10-6. Kenny Blanchard (1-0) was the winning pitcher, with
Marc Mantucca (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central, 0-1) taking the loss. Mantucca allowed all 10 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits.
The nightcap turned into a donnybrook. The Red Men led, 15-6, after five innings, thanks in part to a six-run fourth inning with Mantucca hitting a two-run double.
Drew Bailey and
Mike Farias both connected on two-run doubles in a five-run fifth inning. The Vikings came back with four runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the game, 15-15, after nine innings. Carthage scored the go-ahead in the 10th inning.
Matt Cmiel reached base on an infield error, advanced to second on a bunt and scored on a single by
Zach Wade. The Vikings put two runners on with two outs in the 10th, but pitcher
Sam Wilhelms (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac, 2-0) got Mike Coduto on a called third strike to end the game. The loss went to Matt Peterson (0-1),
Marc Mantucca went two-for-five with four RBI.
On Saturday-Sunday, April 5-6, the Red Men travel to Decatur, Ill., for to play a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Millikin University (4-13, 0-5 CCIW) at Sunnyside Park. The two teams play a Saturday, April 5 doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by a Noon single game on Sunday, April 6.
