Red Men and the Thunder Play a Saturday Twinbill at Legion Field

Box Score The Carthage College baseball team (16-20, 8-11 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened a three-game series with CCIW-opponent Wheaton College (Ill., 13-23, 9-10 CCIW) on Friday, May 3 with a 6-1 loss at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The two team play a Saturday, May 4 doubleheader at Legion Field in Carol Stream, Ill., beginning at 1 p.m.
 
A sacrifice fly by Michael Szalach put the Thunder up, 1-0, in the second inning.  A sacrifice fly by Justin Swider and a base-loaded walk to Kyle Mellinger in  the third made it 3-0.  Wheaton broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning to go up, 6-0.  Phil Tuttle hit an RBI-single.  Szalach was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Taylor Howe hit a sacrifice fly.  The Red Men scored their lone run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Nick Schmidlkofer (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego), who went three-for-four with that RBI. 

Wheaton pitcher Michael Kaufman (6-1) stopped Carthage on one run on four hits and no walks in the nine-inning, complete-game effort.  Jeremy Salzman (Jr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove, 2-5) took the loss and gave up all six runs, five earned, on six hits and two walks.
