Augie Schmidt IV's five-game suspension came to an end on Saturday, April 6, as the Carthage College baseball team (7-12, 2-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost both ends of a CCIW-doubleheader to No. 23 Augustana College (Ill., 16-4, 4-2), 15-4 and 5-2, at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Ill.
The two teams conclude the three-game set with a Noon single game on Sunday, April 7. Coach Schmidt will resume his on-field duties on Sunday.
In the opener, Augustana scored early and often off starting pitcher
Jeremy Salzman (Jr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove, 0-3). The Vikings collected 13 runs, eight of those earned, on 15 hits and two walks over the first five innings. The Vikings led, 13-4, going into the sixth inning, and the game was called in the seventh due to a 10-run rule. Augustana second baseman Kurt Schmidt led the onslaught with a perfect four-for-four and three RBI. The Red Men managed only seven hits off Jared McIntosh (4-2).
In the second game, the Vikings scored all five of their runs in the first four innings off Carthage starting pitcher Josh Daniels (Jr., Elk Grove, Ill., 1-1). Daniels gave up five runs on six hits and four walks over five innings.
Mitch Lochen blanked the Vikings on two hits over the final three frames. Seth Davis (4-0) was the winner. He allowed just two runs on 11 hits and a walk in the complete-game effort, while striking out 11 batters. Carthage's Stevo Kraynak went three-for-four with an RBI, and
Nick Schmidlkofer had three hits in four trips.
