Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (20-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 26th in the April 4 National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, won its 10th-straight game on Monday, April 9 by sweeping a doubleheader from Carroll University (10-6), 4-3 and 7-0, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Carthage came from behind to win the opening game. Carroll (Wis.) scored two runs off Carthage pitcher
Krystina Leazer in the first inning. Amanda Strutz and Ashlee Leidall led off with singles. Following a sacrifice bunt, Taylor Steinhilber drove in Strutz with a ground ball. Leidall, who moved up on the grounder, then scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers tacked on another run in the sixth to lead, 3-0.
Carthage won the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Katie Morman's RBI-double in the seventh finally got the Lady Reds on the board, and
Vicki Pyan followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-2. Carroll coach Amy Gradecki summoned reliever Kristi Johnson, who gave up an RBI-single to
Alyssa Schrader that tied the game and then a single to
Abby Hanson that scored Pyan with the game-winning run.
Krystina Leazer (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) improved her record to 12-1 by limiting the Pioneers to three runs on four hits and no walks, while striking out five. Taylor Steinhilber (4-2) took the loss. Carthage's
Katie Morman went three-for-four with an RBI.
In the second game, Carthage scored three runs on two hits and two errors in the second inning. That margin held up until the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Reds scored four times for the final, 7-0 margin. With two outs, Carroll shortstop Stephanie Speel misplayed a grounder that scored
Becky Cronk from second and opened the floodgates.
Vicki Pyan singled home a run.
Jen Precht scored on a wild pitch, and
Abby Hanson singled home the final run.
Alyssa Schrader (Sr., Plainfield, Ill./South) upped her record to 8-1 with a two-hit shutout and one walk.
Katie Morman (Fr., Kenosha, Wis./Somers-Shoreland Lutheran) and
Randi Rederer (Fr., Bristol, Wis./Salem-Westosha Central) had two hits each for Carthage. Christine Roggemann (1-4) took the loss for the Pioneers.
Carthage opens its CCIW-schedule on Wednesday, April11 with a 3 p.m. twinbill versus Wheaton College (Ill., 17-9, 0-2 CCIW) at Leedy Field in Wheaton, Ill.
