Softball Sweeps Augustana (Ill.) on April 22

Lady Reds and Illinois Wesleyan Play for first Place on Wednesday in Bloomington, Ill.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (30-4, 10-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 24th in the April 18 National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, swept a Sunday, April 22 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 22-10, 5-5 CCIW), 2-1 and 6-5, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis. 

The Lady Reds remain in second place in the league, trailing Illinois Wesleyan University (29-4, 7-1 CCIW) by one game in the loss column.  With the two wins, Carthage has notched its first-ever 30-win season.
 
In the opening game, Carthage took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Olivia Scott.  Augustana got a run back in the top of the seventh, and the Vikings put runners on the corners, but Carthage pitcher Krystina Leazer (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) got Jillian Gibbs to line out to centerfield to end the game.  Leazer (20-2) allowed one run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out six batters.  With the victory, she also broke her own 2011 season record of 19 wins.  Sarah Hintz (13-3) took the loss.  Carthage's Vicky Pyan (So., Crystal Lake, Ill./South) went two-for-three.
 
In the second game, the Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, two runs coming on a double by Courtney Ledezma.  Abby Hanson's three-run double in the third inning tied the game, 3-3.  The two teams traded two-run innings in the fifth.  Carthage's Katie Morman homered, her fifth of the year, to lead off the fifth frame, and two outs later, Alyssa Schrader (Sr., Plainfield, Ill./South) launched her 12 round-tripper.  Schrader's home run broke a school record of 11 first set by Gina Buchmiller in 2006 and matched by Schrader in 2010. 

The Lady Reds went ahead, 6-5, in the top of the seventh.  With one out, Katie Morman walked.  One out later, pinch-runner Becky Cronk took third on a single by Vicki PyanAlyssa Schrader walked to load the bases, and Abby Hanson singled to third to score Cronk with the go-ahead run.  Krystina Leazer (21-2), in relief of Schrader, was the winning pitcher.  Leazer allowed one run on four hits over the final three innings.  Jaime Rehmert (0-1) took the loss.  Abby Hanson (So., Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) had a big game, going three-for-four with two doubles and four RBI.
 
Carthage travels to Bloomington, Ill., on Wednesday, April 25 for a showdown with first-place Illinois Wesleyan.  The two teams play a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Illinois Wesleyan Softball Field.
