The Carthage College men's tennis team (15-7, 1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) nipped CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (Ill., 10-7, 2-2 CCIW), 5-4, on Wednesday, April 18 at the Smeds Tennis Center in Kenosha, Wis.
 
Carthage Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis., 22-9), ranked 15th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Alex Harbert, ranked 18th in the region, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, at No. 1 singles.  Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands, 24-6) defeated the Bluejays' Will Jung, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.  Matt Whiteside (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 19-5) won over Vincent McPherson, 7-2(2), 6-0, at No. 3 singles. With his win over McPherson, Whiteside collected his 84th career singles victory and tied a Carthage record set by Tres Heimann between 2003 and 2006.

Alex McLean (Sr., Belleville, Ill./West, 9-19) lost his No. 4 singles contest to Luke Tanaka, Tanaka winning, 6-0, 6-0.  Nick Boomgarden (Sr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 14-17) lost to Kevin Noble at No. 5 singles, Noble winning, 6-2, 6-2, and Brian Howes (Jr., Bartlett, Ill., 11-16) fell to Jim White at No. 6 singles, white winning, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
 
The Red Men's No. 1 doubles team of Lotz and Hazelman (28-2), ranked fourth in the region won Harbert and Jung, ranked 17th in the region, 8-5.  Carthage's No. 2 doubles team of Whiteside and Boomgarden (18-7) defeated McPherson and Noble, 8-4, but the Bluejays' No. 3 team of Tanaka and Justin Guenther won over McLean and Conor Moon (Fr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock, Ill.-Marian Central Catholic, 9-16) by an 8-5 margin.  On Saturday, April 21, the Red Men travel to Rock Island, Ill., for a double-dual match at Augustana College (Ill.).  Carthage plays the host-Vikings (14-6, 2-0 CCIW) at 9 a.m. and the University of Dubuque at 4 p.m.
