Lady Reds Play Host to North Central (Ill.) on Tuesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Carthage College softball team (23-3, 3-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 25th in the April 11 National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, split a Saturday, April 14 doubleheader with CCIW-opponent Millikin University (13-13, 2-4 CCIW) at the Borg Warner Sports Complex in Decatur, Ill.,  The Lady Reds won the opening game, 10-3, but fell to the Big Blue in the nightcap by a 7-2 margin. 

The loss in the second game snapped a 13-game Carthage winning streak, which was tied for second best in school history.  The Lady Reds are tied for second place in the CCIW behind No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan University (22-4, 5-1 CCIW).
 
Carthage jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, with Alyssa Schrader connecting on a solo home run.  Millikin scored a run in the second, but Carthage came with a run in the third on a solo shot by Katie Morman.  The Big Blue scored single runs in the third and fourth to shave the Carthage lead to 4-3, but the Lady Reds added two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh to win, 10-3.  Vicki Pyan hit a two-run homer in the sixth, followed by Schrader's second homer of the game.  Vicki Pyan (So., Crystal Lake, Ill./South) went three-for-three with three runs scored and two RBI.  Pitcher Krystina Leazer (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) improved her record to 15-1 by limiting the Big Blue to three runs on five hits and walk.  Leazer's 15 wins are fourth-best in Carthage history behind her own 2011 season record of 19 victories.
 
In the second game, each team scored two runs in the opening inning, with Schrader hitting a two-run homer for her third blast of the day.  Schrader now has eight home runs on the season.  Millikin came up with four runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead and added a final run in the sixth for the 7-2 winning margin.  Alyssa Schrader (Sr., Plainfield, Ill./South, 8-2) took the loss and allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks over four innings.  Leazer pitched the final three innings. 

Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent North Central College (12-12, 1-5 CCIW) on Tuesday, April 17 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
