The Carthage College men's tennis team (9-5, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Grinnell College (14-3), 6-3, on Wednesday, March 21 in Orlando, Fla. Carthage plays two more matches on its spring trip, including Friday, March 23 contests against Colorado College at 9 a.m., EDT and Hope College at 4 p.m., EDT.
In the loss to Grinnell, Carthage's
Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis., 14-6), ranked 14th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, lost his No. 1 singles match to Elliott Czarnecki, Czarnecki winning, 6-4, 6-3.
Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands, 13-6) lost to the Pioneers' Eric Ritter at No. 2 singles, Ritter winning, 6-3, 7-6.
Matt Whiteside (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathway Prep, 9-5) was a winner at No. 3 singles.
Alex McLean (Sr., Belleville, Ill./West, 6-12) lost at No. 4 singles, as did
Nick Boomgarden (Sr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 10-11) at No. 5 singles and
Brian Howes (Jr., Bartlett, Ill., 9-8) at No. 6 singles contests.
The Red Men's No. 1 doubles team of Lotz and Hazelman, ranked second in the region ran their record to 18-1 with a 8-3 win over Czarnecki and Michael Cole. Carthage's No. 2 doubles team of Whiteside and Boomgarden (7-7) won over Grinnell, but the Red Men's No. 3 team of McLean and
Conor Moon (Fr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock, Ill.-Marian Central Catholic, 4-10) lost to the Pioneers.
