Red Men Travel to Lakeland for a Wednesday Doubleheader

The Carthage College baseball team (23-12, 12-6 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated CCIW-opponent Millikin University (11-25, 5-13 CCIW), 12-6, on Sunday, May 2 in the finale of a three-game series at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Ill. 

The two teams split a Saturday, May 1 doubleheader, with Carthage winning the first game, 13-5, before losing the nightcap, 14-10, on a walk-off grand slam home run by the Big Blue's Theo Facer. With North Central College sweeping a three-game set from Augustana College (Ill.) over the weekend, the Red Men remain in third place in the CCIW, three games behind league-leader North Central (Ill.) with three game to go.

In Sunday's game, Millikin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Mike Maziarz. Carthage scored five times in the second. Josh Albers led off with a solo home run. The Red Men proceeded to load the bases, and Billy Herrin walked to force in a run. Joey Aiello hit a sacrifice fly, and Mike Hughes followed with an RBI-single. Will Hodges reached on an infield error, allowing the fifth run of the inning to score. 

Millikin cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the second on a solo homer by Peter Bonner. The Big Blue tied the game, 5-5, in the fourth on a two-run homer by Bonner and an RBI-double by Theo Facer. The Red Men re-gained the lead, 7-5, in the fifth on a fielder's choice-RBI off the bat of Matt Soderlund and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Eickmeyer. Carthage upped its lead to 8-5 in the sixth on an RBI-single by Will Hodges. Millikin narrowed the margin to 8-6 in the eighth on a fielder's choice-RBI off the bat of Stefen Edwards. Carthage bumped its lead to 12-6 in the top of the ninth on Billy Herrin's two-run double and a two-run single by Joey Aiello.

Carthage starting pitcher Eric Rohe (4-1) allowed five runs, just two earned, on eight hits and one walk over six innings, while striking out five batters. Chadd Ori worked the final three innings to collect his second save. Logan Bolton (0-5), the first-of-three Millikin pitchers, took the loss. Carthage's Joey Aiello went two-for-four with three RBI and Billy Herrin two-for-five with three RBI. Carthage travels to Howards Grove, Wis., on Wednesday, May 5 to play non-conference opponent Lakeland College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
