The Carthage College baseball team (11-7, 3-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 20th in the April 6 “D3baseball.com” poll, lost to CCIW-opponent and No. 26 Wheaton College (Ill., 16-4, 3-1 CCIW), 11-1, on Wednesday, April 7 at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Ill.

Wheaton tagged Carthage starting pitcher Scott Danly for six runs in the second inning. Danny Pyne singled in the first run, Charlie Antal singled in the second run, and Brian Kolb drove in the third run with a single. Brian Whartnaby scored on a passed ball, and Josh Weaver hit a two-run single. The Thunder went up, 7-0, in the fourth inning off reliever Danny Dahm when Ryan Miller walked, went to third on a ground ball and scored from second on a an error by Red Men shortstop Zach Kozlowski.

Carthage finally got on the board with a run in the sixth. Trevor Whately singled, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on an infield error and scored on a fielder's choice grounder. Wheaton upped its lead to 11-1 in the seventh after Matt Martinski replaced Dahm on the hill. Martinski walked Danny Pyne, who moved up to third on a double by Trey Martin. Charlie Antal was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and one out later, Brian Kolb singled in two runs. Justin Zeller walked to re-load the bases, and Josh Weaver was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Drew Golz followed with a single to center to score Kolb with the fourth run of the inning, and the game was called due to a 10-run rule, with the Thunder winning by an 11-1 margin.

Wheaton starting pitcher Eric Albaugh (3-0) went the distance and limited the Red Men to one run over seven innings on four hits and a walk, while striking out five batters. Scott Danly (3-1) took the loss for Carthage. Wheaton's Brian Kolb went two-for-five with three RBI, Josh Weaver two-for-four with three RBI, and Trey Martin went three-for-four

On Saturday-Sunday, April 10-11, the Red Men entertain conference-opponent Illinois Wesleyan University (9-9, 4-1 CCIW) in a three-game series at the Carthage Baseball Field. The two teams play a Noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 10, followed by a single game at Noon on Sunday, April 11.
