The Carthage College baseball team (21-11, 10-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Tuesday, April 27 doubleheader from non-conference opponent Marian University (10-22), 7-6 and 9-0, at Herr-Baker Field in Fond du Lac, Wis. Carthage pitchers Brett McQuade and Bryan Kieffer combined on a no-hitter in the nightcap.

In the first game, Carthage fell behind, 4-0, after three innings behind starting pitcher Danny Dahm. The Red Men cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Tim Hansen and a two-run single by Josh Albers. After the Sabres went up, 6-3, in the bottom of the fifth, Carthage score twice in the sixth to close the gap to a run, 6-5. The Red Men tied the game, 6-6, in the seventh on an RBI-single by Billy Herrin. Carthage scored the go-ahead run in the seven-inning game in the eighth frame when Will Hodges walked, stole second and scored on a single by Albers. Tim Keyes (1-0) was the winner in relief of Dahm and Andy Pucher. Keys allowed no runs on four hits and no walks over the final three innings, while striking out four batters. Cory Martin (1-3), the third of three Marian pitchers, took the loss. Billy Herrin went three-for-five with an RBI, and Will Hodges went three-for-three.

In the nightcap, Carthage scored three in the second inning, two in the fifth and four in the sixth inning. Josh Albers had a two-run single as part of that four-run sixth frame. Trevor Whately, Billy Herrin and Joey Aiello each had two hits. Brett McQuade (3-0) was credited with the win by working the first four innings in the seven-inning game. McQuade held the Sabres hitless while walking two batters. Bryan Kieffer completed a combined no-hitter by shutting out Marian over the final three innings to earn his first save. Jesse Blum (2-4) took the loss.
