The Carthage College baseball team (19-11, 10-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Monday, April 26 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 20-12, 5-10 CCIW), 9-8 and 6-0, at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, Wis. The sweep kept Carthage in third place in the CCIW, one game behind second-place North Park University at 11-4 and two games behind league-leader North Central College at 12-3.

In the first game, Carthage overcame an 8-7 deficit and four fielding errors with two runs in the eighth inning. Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI-single by Jared McIntosh and a sacrifice fly off the bat of T.J. O'Donnell, Carthage took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning on RBI-singles by Joey Aiello and Will Hodges, followed by a sacrifice fly by Josh Albers. After the Red Men took a 4-2 lead in the second, the Vikings scored six times in the third inning to take an 8-4 lead and chase starting pitcher Chris Krepline out of the game. Joe Cecchi hit an RBI-single, Jeremy Juhl a fielder's choice RBI-grounder, Kevin Serna a two-run single and Dave Hoffman a two-run double.

Carthage got run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by Zach Kozlowski. The Red Men continued to chip away, scoring single runs in both the fourth and fifth frames to narrow the gap to 8-7. In the eighth, Will Hodges drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly, and a walk to Matt Soderlund from Vikings pitcher Vince Frede forced in the go-ahead run. Josh Albers went three-for-three with two doubles, and Joey Aiello went two-for-five with two RBI. Chadd Ori (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of Chris Krepline, who surrendered seven runs, six earned, on eight hits. Ori allowed just one run on five hits over the final six and two-thirds innings. Scott Danly got the final out of the game to earn his first save of the year. Rick Erickson (0-1), third third-of-four Augustana pitchers, took the loss.

In the nightcap, Red Men hurdler Eric Rohe (3-1) twirled a three-hit shutout, walking one and striking out seven batters. Jared McIntosh (2-1) was the losing pitcher. Carthage broke open a 1-0 game with a four-run third inning. Josh Albers doubled in two runs, and Tyler Eickmeyer singled in two more. The Red Men travel to Fond du Lac, Wis., on Tuesday, April 27 to play a 3 p.m. twinbill against Marian University (10-20) at Herr-Baker Field.
