Red Men Play Host to Augustana (Ill.) This Weekend

The Carthage College baseball team (16-11, 7-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) bombed non-conference opponent Concordia University (Wis.. 15-10), 18-8, on Tuesday, April 20 at the Carthage Baseball Field in Kenosha, Wis.

Carthage had a 10-0 lead after two innings. Trevor Whately led off the game with a triple and scored on a single by Billy Herrin. The Red Men proceeded to load the bases, which Matt Soderlund cleared with a triple down the rightfield line for a 4-0 lead. The Red Men loaded the bases again in the second. A base-loaded walk to Will Hodges forced in a run. Billy Herrin scored on a wild pitch. Josh Albers drove in a run with an infield grounder. Matt Soderlund and Chris D'Angelo followed with back-to-back RBI-singles, and Soderlund scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch for a 10-0 lead. The Falcons got two runs back in the third, and the score was 10-2.

Carthage loaded the bases again in the third. Will Hodges hit a two-run single, and Josh Albers followed with a three-run homer for a 15-2 lead. Concordia scored a run the fourth to make it 15-3. The Red Men went up, 18-3, with three runs in the fifth. The Falcons scored three in the top of the seventh to make it 18-8, and the game was called due to a 10-run rule.

The Red Men were quite efficient, scoring 18 runs on just 10 hits. Matt Soderlund went two-for-three with four RBI. Billy Herrin went three-for-four with an RBI, and Trevor Whately went two-for-three with three runs scored and an RBI. Josh Albers drove in four runs and Will Hodges three. Pitcher Brett McQuade (2-0), making his first collegiate start, was the beneficiary. McQuade allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk. Scott Danly worked the final two innings. Sam Ahlersmeyer (0-2), the first of six Falcon pitchers, took the loss.

On Saturday-Sunday, April 24-25, the Red Men entertain CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill.) in a three-game series, also at the Carthage Baseball Field. The two teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 24, followed by a Noon single game on Sunday, April 25.
