BIRMINGHAM – Madison Payne of the Carthage women's track & field team competed at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday afternoon. Payne closed the championship weekend, competing in the shot put.
Competing in the first flight of the event, Payne opened the competition with a throw of 12.39 meters. Payne improved the mark on the second attempt with a throw of 12.79 meters, keeping position in the field. The third and final attempt of the flight resulted in a mark of 12.42 meters, concluding the preliminary series.
Payne finished 16th overall with a top mark of 12.79 meters. The performance earned Payne Second Team All-American honors, marking the third All-American recognition of Payne's career.
"It's always difficult to have a rough day on the biggest day of the year." said head coach Greg Raimondi. "Madison has worked hard this indoor season and unfortunately hasn't seen the mark that matches the numbers we have been seeing in training. She has grown a ton this season as a leader in the throws group and competitor. I think this setback will hopefully fuel her actions over the next few months. We are looking forward to getting back to work to reach her potential."
The Firebirds return to action on Thursday, March 26, at the First Chance Invitational hosted by North Central. For more information, visit
