Firebirds Post Strong Marks at Squig Converse

WHITEWATER - The Carthage men's track & field team traveled to Wis-Whitewater to compete in the Squig Converse on Friday evening. While no team scores were recorded, it was another strong outing for the Firebirds with several personal bests as the team continues to build into the indoor season.

  • Voye's 60m dash prelim time of 6.92 seconds ranks second all-time for the Carthage program, passing Kendric Cornelius (2016) at 6.99 seconds. The school record, held by Mac Anderson (2024), stands at 6.91 seconds.
  • Curulewski's 3,000m time of 8:34.10 ranks second on the Carthage Top-10 list for the Firebirds, passing Craig Hundley's (2022) time of 8:34.19. Dan Cotton's school record from 2016 holds at 8:33.28.

The distance crew came away with several personal bests, including Curulewski nearly taking down a school record in the 3,000m. How does a performance like this set up the group heading into the back half of the indoor season?

Our focus coming off of the cross country season was to shift gears in training and pull back the intensity for a while, keeping the big picture in mind," said Head Coach Josh Henry. "These guys are in competition for nearly 9 months of the year. So we're just returning to higher intensity workouts now. I think the number of PRs and strong performances this weekend is an indicator of the guys starting to get their racing legs under them as the training intensity ramps up. A great step for the distance crew this week, but we certainly have much more in mind when it comes to the big picture."

It was another strong outing for the Firebirds in the jumps events, with athletes scoring in all four events. How does the team continue to build on the success in these events?

"Our jumps crew is an exciting group predominantly lead by our freshman class. They came to Carthage motivated and the work they've put in up to this point is showing. The fun thing about the jumps squad is how untapped the potential is with them. Even with the high level of performance we've seen out of them thus far, there still is a lot of potential to grow. We will continue to work to make some technical changes and I expect this group to continue to build momentum each week."

Your team hosts the Tadd Metzger Invite and Multi next weekend. What are you hoping to see out of the program in that meet?

"Our goal every week is to be a little bit better than the week previous. I expect to see our guys build consistency and make small steps forward each week. Even if we're not setting personal bests every week, I want to see our approach to training and competition improve everyday. Returning to the TARC for the Tadd Metzger meet next week will be another great opportunity to test ourselves."

Carthage men's track & field returns to the Tarble Athletic & Recreation Center on Feb. 6 to host the Tadd Metzger Invite and Multi on Friday and Saturday. Friday's event begins at 3 p.m., while Saturday's action begins at 12 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
