WHEATON, Ill. – The Carthage women's tennis team traveled to Illinois on Saturday afternoon to take on the Wheaton (Ill.) Thunder in a CCIW dual. It was a tough day for the Firebirds, as the Thunder took an early advantage in doubles play and controlled the momentum through singles play to defeat the Firebirds.

 

In doubles play, Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson dropped a 6-3 battle in #2 doubles against Janet Kondo and Ella Malone. Xingchen Liu and Niki Manojlovic defeated Madeline Gentry and Tatum Thurstone 6-3 in #1 doubles to even the doubles score 1-1. Jordan Miller and Bella Rizzo fell to Sophie Dew and Carly O'Leary 7-5 in #3 doubles. Wheaton claimed the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead over the Firebirds

In singles play, Miller fell to Dew in #5 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 finish. Peterson dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match against Malone in #3 singles. Wheaton then secured the team win with Mia Luo defeating Rizzo 7-5, 6-2 in #6 singles. Arreazola came up short in #2 singles, falling to Thurstone 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Liu fell to Gentry in #1 singles with a final score of 7-6 (14-12), 6-3. Manojlovic came up short in a tight 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-1) battle with Kondo in #4 singles to close out the dual.


 
The Firebirds (1-2) return to action on Friday, Sept. 19 as the squad travels to St. Peter, Minn. to compete in the ITA Regional Tournament. Carthage women's tennis returns to Smeds Tennis Center on Wednesday, Sept. 24 as the Firebirds host Elmhurst at 3 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
