Carroll 4, Carthage 3
KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage women's tennis team opened conference play against the Carroll (Wis.) Pioneers at Smeds Tennis Center on Sunday morning. After a strong start for the Firebirds in doubles play, the Pioneers rallied back to take a 3-2 lead before sealing the win over the hosting Carthage squad.

 

In doubles play, Jordan Miller and Bella Rizzo dropped a #3 doubles match to Makayla Counsell and Megan Trifilio with a final score of 6-2. Xingchen Liu and Niki Manojlovic earned a 6-3 victory in #1 doubles over Natasa Pupovac and Katherine Trifilio. Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson earned a win in #2 doubles with a 6-2 win over Mia Franke and Aalaiya Jacklin. The Firebirds earned the team point and took a 1-0 lead heading into the singles matches.

In singles play, Peterson dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match against M. Trifilio in #3 singles to tie the match at 1-1. Miller fell to Counsell 6-4, 6-0 in #4 singles as Carroll took a 2-1 lead. The Firebirds leveled the score once again at 2-2 as Manojlovic defeated Franke in #4 singles with a pair of 6-3 victories. The Pioneers reclaimed the lead in #2 singles as K. Trifilio defeated Arreazola 6-4, 6-4, before Carroll secured the team win with a 6-4, 6-2 win for Erin Horzewski over Rizzo in #6 singles. Liu rallied in #1 singles with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), (1-0) win over Pupovac. 

The Pioneers defeated the Firebirds 4-3.


 
The Firebirds (0-1) return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10 as Carthage hosts North Park at Smeds Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
