KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage women's tennis team hosted the North Park Vikings at Smeds Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. After cruising through doubles play, the Firebirds battled their way to their first dual victory of the season.

 

In doubles play, Jordan Miller and Bella Rizzo dropped claimed a 6-2 victory in #3 doubles against Holly Chleboun and Jessica Dudas. Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson claimed the doubles point for the Firebirds with a 6-2 victory in #2 doubles against Thea Gifvars and Alexandra Pugachova. Xingchen Liu and Niki Manojlovic completed the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (7-2) win over Katarina Carlberg and Emilia Sand in #1 doubles

In singles play, Rizzo cruised to a #6 singles win, defeating Chleboun 6-1, 6-0 and giving Carthage a 2-0 lead. Arreazola then defeated Sand in #3 singles with a pair of 6-0 victories, pushing the team lead to 3-0. Liu clinched the win for the Firebirds with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Pugachova in #1 singles. The Vikings stole a pair of points late, with Carlberg earning a #2 singles win over Peterson with a 6-2, 6-1 final score and Dudas defeating Manojlovic 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in #4 singles. The dual concluded with Miller earning a tight 7-5, 3-6, (1-0) win over Gifvars in #5 singles.

The Firebirds (1-1) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 as Carthage heads to Wheaton, Ill. to take on the Thunder of Wheaton College at 12:30 p.m. Carthage women's tennis returns to Smeds Tennis Center on Wednesday, Sept. 24 as the Firebirds host Elmhurst at 3 p.m. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
