Women’s Track and Field Named Four Firebirds to 2025 CSC Academic All-District®

KENOSHA - The Carthage College women's track and field team named five student-athletes to this year's 2024-2025 NCAA Division III Academic All-District Teams, as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Abbey Calhoun, a senior from Grayslake, Ill., placed fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump at the 2025 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Outdoor Championships. Calhoun took first place in the triple jump at the 2025 CCIW Indoor Championships. At the national level, Calhoun competed in the triple jump at both the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Calhoun earned All-American honors at both championships, finishing seventh in the triple jump at both. Additionally, Calhoun broke both the indoor and outdoor triple jump records this past season. Nationally, in the North Region, Calhoun had the 34th best mark in the indoor long jump, first in the indoor triple jump, 29th in the outdoor long jump, and first in the outdoor triple jump. 

Tara Schaalma, a sophomore from Juneau, Wis., placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2025 CCIW Outdoor Championships. At the national level, in the North Region, Schaalma had the 47th best time in the indoor 60m hurdles, 9th in the indoor triple jump, 37th in the outdoor 100m hurdles, 27th in the outdoor 400m hurdles, and 26th in the outdoor triple jump. 

Kylie Smith, a senior from Crystal Lake, Ill., placed second in the 5,000-meter run at the 2025 CCIW Outdoor Championships. At the 2024 CCIW Cross Country Championships, Smith placed 5th, clocking in a personal best time of 22:30.2. At the national level, in the North Region, Smith had the 23rd best time in the outdoor 5,000m. Additionally, Smith placed 50th at the NCAA Division III North Region Cross Country Championships. 

Nicole Tarpley, a graduate student from Bloomingdale, Ill., placed third in the discus throw and fourth in the hammer throw at the 2025 CCIW Outdoor Championships. At the 2025 CCIW Indoor Championships, Tarpley took first place in the weight throw. On the national level, Tarpley competed at both the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Tarpley earned All-American honors at both championships. At the indoor championships, Tarpley placed eighth in the weight throw and 12th at the outdoor championships in the discus throw. Nationally, in the North Region, Tarpley had the fifth-best mark in the indoor weight throw, 6th in the outdoor discus throw, and fifth in the outdoor hammer throw. 

The 2025 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Track and Field teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the track, in the field, and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes men's track and field honorees in four divisions: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.

To be considered for Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their institution. Nominated athletes must be ranked in the top 50 in the region in a single event (XC, indoor, or outdoor) and must be an individual performance, not a relay performance. Additionally, nominees must have completed one full calendar year at their institution and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
