GENEVA – Madison Payne and
Mikayla Wright of the Carthage women's track & field team competed in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Friday afternoon. Wright placed 14th, earning Second Team All-American honors. Payne finished right behind in 15th, also earning Second Team All-American honors.
Payne and Wright started day two of the championships for the Firebirds, competing in the shot put. Wright and Payne finished 14th and 15th, both earning Second Team All-American honors. Wright threw 13.42 meters, and Payne collected a mark of 13.41m.
"Today was a better day, our shot putters held their own in a strong field," said assistant coach Greg Raimondi. "Both, Mikayla and Madison moved up a few spots from where they came in and managed their best performances on a national stage. While it's not the marks we were hoping for, it was a solid showing for both of them."
"Mikayla wrapped up her career as a Firebird with the 6th best mark on our outdoor top 10 list and a two-time national qualifier. She leaves the program in a better spot and is someone that highlights what 4 years of hard work and dedication can lead to for those representing our throws program in the future."
"Madison had a rough start to this outdoor season after making the indoor championships. I am proud of her for finding a way to get herself here and perform at a much better level than she did indoors. She looked much more confident and ready to compete at this level. She opened up strong but couldn't find that next throw to get her into the final. I am excited to see what she can accomplish next year."
Three Firebirds will compete tomorrow, Saturday, May 24, at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
