Calhoun Breaks School Record, Firebirds Secure First at Home Invitational

KENOSHA – The Carthage women's track and field team defended the nest and hosted the Tadd Metzger Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Firebirds came away victorious and Abbey Calhoun shattered the triple jump school record.

The Firebirds took first place scoring 162 points. Wheaton and Carroll rounded out the top three spots with scores of 152.33 and 111.16.
 
Who Led the Way

Sprints

Julie Heinrichs took the gold in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.16.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Tara Schaalma placed second clocking in a time of 9.11.

Two Firebirds scored in the 55 meter dash. Anna Kegel took second place with a time of 7.47 and Caitlyn Hodgins ran a time of 7.69 for a third place finish. 

Distance

In the 3000 meter run, Kylie Smith and Jackie Zaravia scored with a second place finish and a sixth place finish, clocking times of 11:06.56 and 12:33.42. 

Three Firebirds scored in the 600 meter run. Leela Desharnais led the Firebirds with a second place finish in a time of 1:54.60. Heather Wagner and Claire Guenther took fifth and sixth place clocking in 1:59.06 and 2:04.77.

In the 800 meter run, Cori Cavanaugh clocked in a time of 2:31.75 for a second place finish. 

Kaitlyn Jerbi took third place in the 5,000 meter with a time of 20:10.24.

Jumps

The Firebirds scored 14 points in the long jump. Christina Hall led the Firebirds with a second place finish and a mark of 5.55 meters. Kegel, Angelina Gersch, and Schaalma took sixth, seventh, and eighth place. 

Calhoun, Gersch, and Emma Kreuziger scored for the Firebirds in the triple jump. Calhoun collected a mark of 12.04 meters for a first place finish. Gersch and Kreuziger took fourth and sixth.

Throws

In the shot put, Madison Payne and Mikayla Wright both scored for the Firebirds. Payne threw a mark of 13.70 meters for a second place finish. Wright placed seventh with a mark of 12.02 meters. 

Three Firebirds scored in the weight throw. Nicole Tarpley led the Firebirds with a first place finish and a mark of 17.63 meters. Payne and Jackie Tuzil threw marks of 15.79 and 14.38 meters for third and seventh place finishes. 

Multi

Three Firebirds scored for Carthage in the pentathlon. Teagan Johnston led the Firebirds with a third place finish with a score of 2670 over five events. Grace Nisius and Julia Kraus took fourth and fifth place with scores of 2588 and 2569.

Relays

In the 4x400 meter relay, the Firebirds squad of Mandy Nelson, Heinrichs, Hodgins, and Schaalma, took first place and clocking in a time of 4:19.59.


High Flyers

Calhoun broke the school record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.04 meters. Calhoun previously held the record of 11.86 for which she set at the Forever Red Alumni Classic back in December. Additionally, Calhoun's mark is ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III Indoor Qualifying List. 

Payne's shot put mark of 13.70 meters moves Payne up to being tied at sixth on the all-time performance list. Payne previously was eighth with a mark of 13.60 meters. Additionally, Payne's mark is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III Indoor Qualifying List. 

Tarpley's mark of 17.63 meters is a personal record and keeps Tarpley at seventh in Carthage history. 

Johnston scored 2670 in the pentathlon for a personal record and keeps Tarpley at eighth in Carthage history. 

Nisius and Kraus' performances in the pentathlon have put them at ninth and tenth in Carthage history with scores of 2588 and 2569.
